No Body Blues

Be careful what you wish for

No Body Blues

Commissioned by my beloved voice teacher Dina Emerson, who wished to hear a song about

Uploading your consciousness to the cloud and something goes very wrong.

Featuring the glorious Deb Hiett in a cameo.

Lyrics

My body is so tired. I did what was required. I never got me fired. I worked 'til I retired. For fifty-five years I have worked to the point of tears. I never managed to conquer my fears; I was damaged in the gears.

And as for my knees, you know, the pain ain't the worst of it. I strain on a cane. When it rains I know the first of it. Explain to the nurse for lidocaine to the bursa; not a vein to disperse a grain.

So I went to the upload center. They had me enter. I watched a presentation from a presenter. There was holographic Marilu Henner, and Caitlyn Jenner, Jeremy Renner, Christian Glover, and the three tenors. They all wanted to me to put my mind into silicon. For the brain, life is still as strong. For the body, the thrill is gone.

I signed on the dotted line. I dined for the final time. They started a spinal line…

And now I got the blues because I got no body.
I'm the essence of me but nothing that you can see.

I can't breathe in here.
I wanna breathe.

So, now that I'm here, I see everything all the time: the spam, and the cybercrime, porn, HTML, and MIME. There is no rest; I'm possessed by beta tests. I'd be blessed by cardiac arrest

But I got no heart; I'm disassembled for parts. I am the state of the art, a disembodied Descartes, et si je pense donc je suis, alors je ne suis qu'ennui, et maintenant je traduis: finis.

And now I got the blues because I got no body.
I'm the essence of me but nothing that you can see.

I've got no body.
