In 1990, I quit music school, packed my VW bug, and drove all my stuff from Los Angeles to New York City in order to make music with my friends. One of those friends was Lisa Loeb, who I knew from college. At first I played percussion, while Chad Fischer had the drum chair, but, when Chad went off to L.A. to drum for School of Fish and co-found Lazlo Bane, I took over.

In the early 90s, Lisa was involved in her neighbor Ethan Hawke’s theater company, Malaparte. During that time, we were playing club shows in NYC, and recording stuff, catch as catch can, in producer Juan Patino’s bedroom. Hawke gave a cassette of one of those songs to Reality Bites director Ben Stiller, who thought it was a good fit for the closing credits. A Houston radio station picked up the song from the Reality Bites soundtrack LP, and, in 1994, Stay became the first Billboard #1 single from an unsigned artist.

The day we recorded Stay in Juan’s bedroom.

To honor the 30th anniversary of that crazy event, we’re breaking the original Nine Stories band out of storage, giving us a good dusting and waxing, slapping a little duct tape on our arthritic joints, and hitting the road together. Let me know if you’re coming!
